An inmate at Saskatchewan Penitentiary in Prince Albert died in custody Wednesday night.

Curtis Robert Cozart was serving a two-year and four-month sentence since October 2016 for assault with a weapon, assault, use of force, theft under $5,000, obstructing a police officer and failing to comply with a probation order, according to Correctional Service Canada.

Cozart was 30 years old when he died. Emergency services were called to the facility before he was taken to hospital where he died around 11 p.m.

The inmate’s next of kin, the police and coroner have been notified.

Correctional Service Canada will review the circumstances of the death as is procedure anytime an inmate dies in custody.
