SASKATOON -- Police are taking an unusual step in the search for the mother of an infant found dead in Saskatoon last fall.

Using DNA found on the bag the baby was inside, a U.S-based company generated an image of what the mother may look like.

In November, a newborn baby girl was found inside a recycling dumpster in downtown Saskatoon in the 400 block of 5th Avenue North.

Police have urged the mother to come forward, but she has yet to be identified.

According to the DNA analysis company, the mother is likely Indigenous with brown eyes and black hair.

“Our priority here is the mother. We have great concerns over the mental state and physical wellbeing over the mother. And that’s why we wanted to push this one forward,” Insp. Dale Solie told reporters in a video news conference.

It’s the first time the Saskatoon Police Service (SPS) has used this type of technology.

Solie said the SPS decided to turn to this technology following Calgary’s success in a similar case. In December 2017, a baby girl was found abandoned in a parking lot about 24 hours after she was born. Two years later, after releasing a generated image of the possible mother, she was found and chargeed.

Police said the image service cost $4,000.

Anyone with information on the mother or baby is asked to call SPS at 306-975-8300 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
