The Province of Saskatchewan is asking residents to help reduce the spread of Dutch elm disease.

Pruning elm trees between April 1 and August 31 is prohibited throughout the province. That's the time of year when elm bark beetles, which carry the disease, are the most active.

Transporting or storing elm firewood in Saskatchewan is also prohibited because of the risk of spreading the disease.

Dutch elm disease is a fungal disease that damages, and in most cases, destroys elm trees.
