A 48-year-old man from the Calgary area is dead after a helicopter crash in central Saskatchewan.

RCMP say the crash happened at about 7:45 p.m. Tuesday in an open field just southeast of the village of Kinley.

The lone pilot, flying from Calgary to Saskatoon, died. His name has not yet been released.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation, but an initial report to Transport Canada indicates weather may have been a factor.

The report — which was filed by Nav Canada, a private corporation that runs a civil air navigation system — states the helicopter reported entering severe icing prior to the crash.

The aircraft, a 206B helicopter made in 1976, then fell below radar coverage. No further communication was received, the report states.

Temperatures dropped to the freezing mark around the time of the crash, according to Environment Canada.

Transportation Safety Board investigators are expected to be on site Wednesday.

The crash is the second time a helicopter has gone down in the province in less than a week.

Last week, two men died when their chopper crashed onto an island in the North Saskatchewan River near Paynton, Sask. They were repairing power lines.

Kinley is approximately 56 kilometres west of Saskatoon.
