Contractor fined $28.000 for Nipawin fatalities.

Lorry Reimer of Nipawin will pay a $28,000 fine for workplace safety violations which resulted in the deaths of two men in 2008.

A provincial court judge in Nipawin has fined Lorry Reimer $28,000. In May, Reimer was found guilty of two counts under the Occupational Health and Safety Legislation.

In April of 2008, Reimer was operating a track hoe that ruptured a gas line. The explosion killed Jack Boxall and his son Brent. Six other people were also injured and several buildings were destroyed.

The charges for which Reimer was found guilty include:

- failing to ensure mechanical excavation does not take place within 600 millimetres of an existing pipeline

- failing to ensure that his actions do not expose workers to risks to their health and safety.

The government of Saskatchewan says since this tragic incident occurred, the OHS Division of the Ministry of Labour Relations and Workplace Safety is reviewing its regulations related to the guarding of above ground gas risers in consultation with industry and affected stakeholders.
