Saskatchewan’s children’s hospital will be named after Jim Pattison, thanks to a $50-million donation from the businessman.

Provincial officials and members of the hospital foundation announced the naming and donation Tuesday.

The hospital, which is set to open in 2019, will be named the Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital, while the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Saskatchewan will be renamed the Jim Pattison Children’s Foundation.

“We want to express our deepest gratitude and appreciation for this extraordinary gift that will benefit the children and families of Saskatchewan for generations to come,” Premier Brad Wall said in a media release.

Pattison, a Vancouver-based businessman and philanthropist, is from Luseland, Sask., and the founder, chairman and CEO of the Jim Pattison Group, Canada’s second largest privately held company.

His donation is the largest-ever financial gift to the hospital foundation, according to the province.

The 176-bed hospital, under construction near the Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon, is projected to cost $285.2 million. The province is contributing $235.5 million.

The building was 55 per cent complete as of the end of April.
