Canada Post has temporarily suspended mail delivery to the Crimean peninsula, according to a spokesperson for the crown corporation.

The decision was made after Ukrposhta, Ukraine’s national postal service, informed Canada Post and other members of the Universal Postal Union of difficulties delivering mail and parcels to Crimea and Sevastopol.

The peninsula was annexed from Ukraine by Russia last month.

The Canada Post spokesperson said mail and parcels that have already been sent will be held temporarily. If there is no change in the situation over the next few days, the items will be returned to their senders.

Customers will be able to resend their items with no additional charge once service resumes.
