A body has been found inside an abandoned semi-truck, parked in the 500 block of Avenue K South.
Saskatoon police were called after the body of a male was discovered inside the truck around 3:30 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
The body has now been identified as Jerry Peequaquat. It is believed that that the 42-year-old homeless man had been living in the truck for some time.
George Peequaquat, Jerry’s uncle, says his nephew had tried to look for work but eventually got frustrated, gave up, and started drinking. He eventually ended up in the cab of the truck.
On the weekend, the wind chills were in the -20°C range. Saskatoon shelters have a cold weather strategy that kicks in at -18°C. But the Salvation Army had no record of Peequaquat staying there, and The Lighthouse Supported Living could not confirm if he had stayed there recently.
Foul play is not suspected at this time. Peequaquat's family has started talking about funeral arrangements and hope to bury him on the Yellow Quill First Nation, the family's home.
