The man who pleaded guilty to a sexual assault on the University of Saskatchewan campus has been sentenced to four years in a federal penitentiary.

Josiah Blackplume was turned into police by his wife, after she saw a security photo of him released by the university.

Blackplume pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting a woman on campus, and robbing another woman who was jogging on the Meewasin Trail in early May.

In court Friday, he apologized for what happened and told the judge he needs help. In a statement, Blackplume said has overwhelming urges when women smile at him and often mistakes it as a willingness to have sex.

Defence lawyer Deb Hopkins said Blackplume is not addicted to drugs or alcohol and is a talented musician who was sexually abused as a child and struggles with schizophrenia.

She said her client, who recently attempted suicide while in custody, is sorry for what he did to the two women.

He was given the four year sentence, with a strong recommendation he be transferred to a psychiatric center to get the treatment he needs.
