A Prince Albert man has been arrested in a case where a homeless woman was so badly burned that she had to have both legs amputated.

Marlene Bird, 47, was found badly beaten and suffering from severe burns June 1 in downtown Prince Albert.

Bird was taken to hospital in Edmonton where both of her legs amputated due to burns suffered during the assault. She continues to recover in hospital.

Police say a 29-year-old man was arrested Saturday evening and has been charged with attempted murder and aggravated sexual assault.

He is being held in custody until his first court appearance Wednesday in Prince Albert provincial court.
