The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has confirmed a case of anthrax in a beef cow from a farm northwest of Melfort. It's the first known case of the disease in Saskatchewan livestock this year.

The CFIA says the cow died July 23. The rest of the farm's herd has been vaccinated and is now under quarantine.

Saskatchewan recorded its worst anthrax outbreak in 2006, when more than 800 cases were reported in the province.

During wet years, dormant anthrax spores can move to the surface of soil and be ingested by grazing livestock. Dormant spores can survive for decades in the ground.

Melfort is about 200 kilometers north of Saskatoon.
