Electoral History

Prince Albert-Churchill River: (See Prince Albert) John Diefenbaker died while an MP in 1979 and a by-election was won by Stan Hovdebo, NDP. He also won the 1984 vote. Hovdebo won Saskatoon Humboldt in 1988 and the new Prince Albert-Churchill River was won by Ray Funk of the NDP. He lost to the Prince Albert mayor, Gordon Kirby, in 1993. Churchill River was formed from the above in 1997 and won by the NDP’s Rick Laliberté. In 2000, Laliberté switched to Liberal and won over Alliance. In 2004, Laliberté lost the Liberal nomination and ran fourth as an Independent to the Conservatives’ Jeremy Harrison. In 2006, with the present riding name, Liberal Gary Merasty won over Harrison by 67 votes. He retired and Conservative Rob Clarke won a March 2008 by-election and in 2011.
