The trial of a man charged in the shooting of an off-duty RCMP officer nearly five years ago in Carrot River is underway Wednesday morning.

The 21-year-old accused cannot be named publicly because he was a youth at the time of the incident. He has pleaded guilty to three charges in connection with the shooting, but is contesting the charge of discharging a fire arm with the intent to wound.

Court heard testimony that in January 2006, the accused was confronted by Constable Toogood after stealing alcohol from a home. The then 16-year-old took his father's rifle and went to the officer's house where he shot Const. Toogood in the arm. The issue is whether the youth meant to shoot Toogood or just scare him.

The trial continues Wednesday afternoon.
