A young offender is facing a first-degree murder charge after a 64-year-old woman was fatally shot in Prince Albert.

Police were called around 9:30 p.m. Sunday to the Crescent Acres area. A woman was in cardiac arrest outside a residence, police said in a media release. She was pronounced dead on scene.

Investigators initially considered the death suspicious, and following an autopsy in Edmonton Wednesday, police said they now consider the incident a homicide.

The victim was identified by police as Marina Thorpe.

The young offender is expected to appear in Prince Albert provincial court Friday.

The incident was not a random act of violence, police said. The victim and the accused were known to each other.
