One woman is dead and another in hospital after a snowmobile crash in northern Saskatchewan over the weekend.

Police and emergency crews responded to the crash in Stanley Mission around 4 a.m. Sunday.

RCMP say it appears a snowmobile collided with a rock along the shore of a bay in the remote northern community.

The driver of the snowmobile, a 25-year-old woman from Stanley Mission, died in the crash. Her name has not been released.

A 20-year-old woman, also from Stanley Mission, was taken to hospital in La Ronge and was later transported to Saskatoon for further treatment.

Both women were not wearing helmets, Mounties said. No charges have been laid and the crash remains under investigation.
