A 36-year-old woman is dead and a three-year-old child is in critical condition following a house fire in North Battleford Friday afternoon.

Emergency crews were called to 2402 100th Street just before 4 p.m. A four-year-old was outside the home when crews arrived.

“Firefighters immediately conducted an aggressive interior attack in the kitchen,” said North Battleford Fire Department Deputy Chief Kevin Steinborn. “We then retrieved two more victims who were still inside the home.”

The woman and three-year-old were unconscious inside the home. Crews revived the toddler using CPR but were unable to revive the woman.

Steinborn said he’s not sure whether the woman passed before or after crews arrived. An autopsy has yet to be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.

The three-year-old is in critical condition at Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon. The four-year-old, who escaped the blaze, is in stable condition.

Fire investigators determined the flames were caused by a short in the kitchen stove.

The last fire fatality in North Battleford was eight years ago.
