A Saskatoon woman charged with drunk driving and killing her eight-year-old daughter broke down in tears Thursday at her first court appearance.

Janelle Christine Cameron, 32, appeared at Saskatoon provincial court on charges of impaired driving causing death and blood alcohol over .08 causing death. She wept after correcting the Crown on her daughter’s name — Kya Topp Cameron.

Janelle Cameron was allegedly driving a vehicle northbound on Saskatoon’s Idylwyld freeway the morning of March 1 when the car flipped over the centre median and landed in the southbound lanes.

She was ejected from the vehicle and rushed to hospital with serious injuries. Her daughter, sitting in the back seat of the vehicle, died at the scene.

Collision analysts laid charges after a lengthy investigation into the crash and after consulting with Crown prosecutors.

Cameron was released Thursday on conditions that include no alcohol or bars. She will be back in court Jan. 7.
