Friends and family of Alexandra Wiwcharuk held a memorial service for her Saturday morning, marking 50 years since the Saskatoon nurse was found murdered.

Wiwcharuk's fellow nurses shared their favourite stories of her at the memorial. She was a beauty queen, wooed on stage by Johnny Cash when he played in Saskatoon.

But then, one Friday night in 1962, she went for a walk by the river. Two weeks later her body was found raped, beaten, and buried in a shallow grave.

Wiwcharuk's nieces started looking into the murder after police laid no charges and the case went cold. They believe they have found new evidence that points to a suspect, but they won't say more than that in fear of jeopardizing the case.

Wiwcharuk's neice Patti believes the person behind her aunt's murder is still walking free. "He's alive and he has had the opportunity to enjoy his life, live, had children, and our aunt never did, she was just starting out."

Police say they don't expect any breakthroughs in this this file, but Wiwcharuk's nieces are confident this case is solvable. They say they won't stop looking for answers until the case is closed.
