Premier Brad Wall is backing his government’s decision to give an online food delivery company $3 million for expansion — even though he says the province won’t be able to afford similar deals after the upcoming budget.

SkipTheDishes, a company founded in Saskatoon, will receive the maximum funding allowed under a contract through the government’s Work Readiness program. The money will come from the Ministry of Economy and be paid over a two-year period.

“There will be 300 jobs created here,” Wall told media Wednesday. “This is going to be important, not just for Saskatoon, but the province.”

The program will see $10,000 given for each new job in the 2016-17 and 2017-18 fiscal years. Some of the new positions will be in management and administration, and others in software development.

If SkipTheDishes does not fulfill all of the hiring and training requirements, some of the money will need to be paid back.

The province likely won’t be able to provide similar deals in the near future, because of the forecasted budget, Wall said.

“It’s not picking winners and losers,” he said.

“We think this kind of initiative can be very helpful in the economy, creating 300 jobs, but we’re simply not going to be able to afford to provide that same sort of training allowances per job going forward, just because of where the budget is at.”

SkipTheDishes, launched in 2013, operates in 10 cities across Canada as well as four cities in the U.S.

Saskatchewan’s budget is set to be released June 1.
