A Saskatoon police officer has been released from hospital after being hit by a car while chasing a suspect.

The 37-year-old officer was struck on 33rd Street West, near Idylwyld Drive, Tuesday afternoon. Video posted to Facebook shows the officer run through traffic and move out of frame before being hit. He then flies through the air before landing on the hood as the car’s driver slams on the brakes.

A media release from police states the officer was responding to a report of a vehicle stolen on Edmonton Avenue. The vehicle had been left running with keys inside, police say.

Officers spotted the vehicle on the 300 block of Avenue T North and followed it to 33rd Street and Idylwyld Drive. Police say the suspect then abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene on foot.

The officer was struck by a westbound car while chasing the suspect.

Police initially stated the officer was hit by the stolen vehicle, but a correction issued around 6 p.m. stated the car that hit the officer was not the stolen vehicle.

The officer was taken to hospital and released by Tuesday night. Injuries were initially believed to be serious, but police said Wednesday he was not seriously hurt.

The suspect, a 23-year-old man, was arrested just after 7 p.m. in an apartment on the 1100 block of Avenue B North. He's since been charged with possessing stolen property over $5,000.

The driver of the vehicle that struck the officer is not facing any charges.

Drivers were asked to avoid the area following the collision.

CORRECTION: Police initially stated the officer was hit by the stolen vehicle, but a correction issued around 6 p.m. stated the car that hit the officer was not the stolen vehicle.
