Drivers with loud vehicles may have to pay for revving their engine on a city street.

A noise bylaw amendment passed by Saskatoon city council Tuesday night allows police to ticket all vehicles which operate in a manner that disturbs the public and sets a noise limit of between 92 and 96 decibels specifically for motorcycles.

Coun. Troy Davies proposed removing the decibel limits after police chief Clive Weighill said they were not needed, but most councillors supported the limits as an another tool for enforcement.

Many motorcycle riders have said the limits placed on motorcycles are unfair, arguing that loud bikes are a safety precaution for riders.

The city says there will be an amnesty period where motorcycle riders can have their bike tested and warnings will be handed out before enforcement begins.
