When the trial began for three Saskatoon firefighters accused of obstructing and assaulting a police officer, concerns were raised about whether it would affect the relationship between the two agencies.
Now, the firefighters have been found not guilty of all the charges, and the judge says he believes the testimony of the firefighters over the police officers.
The charges were laid after the off-duty firefighters were play fighting on the Broadway Bridge. Police thought it was an assault, stopped to break it up, and a scuffle ensued.
Defence lawyers question the actions of police that night and wonder if this happens too often.
Both Police Chief Clive Weighill and Acting Fire Chief Dan Paulsen say it’s an unfortunate incident, but it will not have a negative impact on the strong relationship between them.
The police chief says he doesn’t expect the officers will face any disciplinary action from this case.
The firefighters are still suspended from their jobs with pay. Fire and Protective Services is reviewing the judge's ruling before it decides to let them return to their jobs.
