Students at Saskatchewan's largest university will be digging deeper into their pockets to pay for classes in the fall.

The University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon says tuition fees are going up an average of 4.5 per cent for the 2014-15 academic year.

The rate changes for specific programs range from zero to 5.5 per cent for domestic students.

Tuition rates in the College of Arts and Science, where 40 per cent of students are enrolled, will increase by 4.15 per cent, while those in dentistry won't see any increase at all.

Provost and vice-president academic Brett Fairbairn says there are several principles used to determine tuition rates, but balancing the university's budget isn't one of them.

Tuition revenue is 23 per cent of the university's operating budget and the rest of the money comes largely from the provincial government.
