The Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation expressed concern over provincial budget cuts, transformational change and a recent court ruling at its annual council meeting in Saskatoon Thursday.

The ruling could ban non-Catholic students from attending catholic schools. Both the local and national presidents say the priority is to ensure students are not impacted, but that it’s tough to do so with amid instability.

"There's so much uncertainty in the sector and instability and that's a concern for the federation,” STF president Patrick Maze said. “Teachers do their best work when they're properly supported and respected.”

He said there’s been so much instability in the teaching sector and the added court ruling has only made it worse. Maze said its important supports are in place for teachers and students.

The Canadian Teachers’ Federation president said education can’t be looked at as an expense.

“Education needs to be looked at as an investment because the future of Saskatchewan is not going to improve if we don't have students who are engaged and able citizens,” CTF president Heather Smith said.

The STF said it has faced one roadblock after another and teachers are concerned about their classrooms.
