An Ontario record store is taking a chance on vinyl sales in Saskatoon.

Sunrise Records will take over the HMV stores at Lawson Heights and Midtown Plaza once the HMV spaces are officially vacant.

In total, the retailer will take over 70 HMV stores across Canada. Sunrise Records currently has nine stores in Ontario.

“We are excited to bring Sunrise nationwide, and would like to thank all of the suppliers and landlords who worked so closely with us to allow us to be a destination for physical music in Canada,” Doug Putman, president of Sunrise Records, said in a statement.

Putman said he plans to hire former HMV Saskatoon employees in the new stores.

The takeover comes at a time when there is an increase in streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music.

But according to a recent Nielsen Music Canada report, vinyl sales grew 29 per cent from 2015 to 2016.

Aside from vinyl, Sunrise Records will sell DVDs, board games and themed apparel.

The stores are set to open their doors in the spring.
