Investigators say an attempt to melt copper in a fireplace is the suspected cause of a fire that destroyed a house near Grandora Tuesday morning.

Warman RCMP said it’s believed the individual attempting to melt the copper fled the house before the arrival of police and the Asquith Fire Department.

The house, located off Highway 14 about 15 kilometres west of Saskatoon, was completely destroyed by the blaze and a subsequent search of the property uncovered numerous items of stolen property.

Items seized by police include a spool of copper wire and a stolen truck that was in the process of being dismantled.

RCMP said the property was the subject of a January 2014 investigation in which two men were charged with possession of stolen property.

One man is being sought in connection with the case but police have not released any names.
