A high-tech stolen cellphone led police to two men accused of stealing a vehicle in Saskatoon Sunday night.

The vehicle was taken from a business at Eighth Street and Grosvenor Avenue just before 10:30 p.m., and while police weren’t initially able to locate the vehicle they were able to zero in on the alleged thieves via the vehicle owner’s cellphone that had GPS tracking capability.

Officers tracking the phone located it at a downtown business and began monitoring two individuals inside the business, with GPS updates matching their movements as they left the business and began to walk away from the area.

Police communications staff placed a call to the stolen cellphone number but the call went unanswered. Officer approached two men and interviewed them, with one man, professing his innocence, producing a cellphone from his pocket that showed the missed call from police headquarters from moments earlier.

Both men were taken into custody and further investigation resulted in the stolen car being located several blocks away. The men have been charged with theft of a motor vehicle and theft under $5,000.
