The communities of Pelican Narrows, Sandy Bay, Jan Lake and Birch Portage remain in a state of emergency as wildfires continue to burn in northern Saskatchewan.

Some of the communities have been evacuated and roads to the areas remain closed. There are currently six uncontained fires burning in the province. A special air quality statement is in effect along Highway 155, including Pelican Narrows and Sandy Bay. Around 300 people are still in Pelican Narrows and there are no plans at this time to further evacuate the community.

Almost all of the province’s wildfire resources are focused on the fire near Pelican Narrows and it is now considered stable. The fire situation in Sandy Bay is also stable.

More than 2,300 people have been forced to leave the area as a result of the wildfires. The province says there is no need to donate any food or clothing, and all communities and evacuees are already supplied with basic needs.
