Two people are facing charges, including attempted murder, after shots were fired at police during a pursuit north of Regina.

On Wednesday night, Regina police alerted RCMP about a minivan that had fled north from the city on Highway 6, RCMP said in a news release Friday. It was reported that the people inside the vehicle had a gun.

Members of the White Butte, Lumsden, Southey, Punnichy and Wynyard RCMP detachments joined in the search for the vehicle, along with an RCMP canine unit from Regina.

A motorist saw a gun being fired out the side door of a van into an open field on Highway 6 north of Southey, RCMP said. Police later located the van in the Punnichy area.

Police say officers then saw a man and a woman in an altercation with a 65-year-old man who lives in the area, in what appeared to be an attempt to steal the victim’s vehicle.

A long-barrelled gun was used during the attempted vehicle theft, but no shots were fired and the victim suffered minor injuries.

When officers confronted the two suspects, they got back in the van and fled eastbound on Highway 15. Moments later, shots were fired from the van at an RCMP vehicle that was pursuing the suspects. Police say officers did not fire any shots and no one was hurt.

The vehicle was stopped about seven kilometres east of Punnichy and a 32-year-old woman and a 24-year-old man were arrested without incident.

The two, both from Regina, each face several charges, including attempted murder, robbery with a firearm, flight from police, dangerous driving and careless use of a firearm.

Both have been remanded in custody and are scheduled to appear in Regina provincial court Monday.
