Another worker has been seriously injured at Agrium’s Vanscoy potash mine in less than two weeks.

The employee was injured Sunday and airlifted to hospital in Saskatoon, according to Darrin Kruger, president of the United Steelworkers Local 7552. His injuries are serious but he is expected to survive.

The incident is the second time in less than two weeks a worker at the mine was seriously injured on the job.

Twenty-nine-year-old Chad Wiklun was injured Aug. 8 after he became caught between two pieces of equipment. He died days later in hospital.

Kruger said an investigation is ongoing into Sunday’s incident. He provided no other details on the employee’s injuries, but said his family is asking for privacy.

The worker’s name has yet to be released.

Todd Steen, the mine’s general manager, said workers are shaken by the incident.

“Our workforce was devastated with the loss of Chad and now we’re in front of them again telling them about another significant injury to a coworker,” he said.

“These are coworkers, but they’re also friends and they’re family.”

Production has been shut down at the mine but employees are still on site, according to Steen.
