The Saskatoon Fire Department has suspended the search for a person who reportedly walked into the South Saskatchewan River early Sunday.

Rescue crews were called at approximately 12:30 a.m. Sunday after two witnesses reported that a person was seen walking on the river ice leading from Rotary Park before appearing to disappear into the water just east of the Sid Buckwold Bridge.

Firefighters who searched the area for approximately 90 minutes at the time of the report confirmed tracks led onto the ice but did not return.

The search resumed later Sunday as crews searched the area of open water from the last point where the individual was seen and for several hundred metres downstream as well as the area around the weir.

The age, identity and gender of the person is unknown although indications are it was likely an adult.
