A Saskatchewan family is in Stony Rapids, searching for a loved one who is believed drowned after a police chase.

Ryan Donard ran from RCMP after officers responded to a complaint early Saturday morning at a home in the community. He ended up on the Fond du Lac River and, according to RCMP, disappeared beneath the surface.

Mounties believe he drowned, but Donard’s body has not yet been found. Search efforts are still underway.

Prince Albert Police Service has since been brought in to conduct an independent investigation into the incident. The RCMP requested the investigation and has asked the Ministry of Justice to appoint an independent observer.

The investigation is one of three recently launched external RCMP investigations connected to the deaths of men evading police in Saskatchewan.

The other two deaths occurred about three months ago. The first saw a man die after losing control of his vehicle during a car chase near Onion Lake. The second occurred after a man tried to escape police and later drowned in a slough near Macklin.
