A call to change the team name and logo at a city high school didn’t get far Tuesday evening.

Dozens of people showed up to a Saskatoon Public School board meeting to ask that Bedford Road Collegiate change its “Redmen” team nickname and end the use of a logo that features the profile of a First Nations man.

Speakers told the board that the name creates a negative image for the school and a hostile environment for First Nations students.

The board says it will continue consultations on the issue and wants to seek input from other school and community organizations before responding to the request.

That decision didn’t sit well with many of those who spoke to trustees.

"It’s disheartening, I guess, to see that they still believe more consultation is needed, more dialogue is needed,” said Erica Lee, who has been active in the campaign for change.

“For the past nearly three years we have been presenting them this evidence . . . and they still can’t make up their mind about this racist mascot.”
