Brandy Mitchell just wants her dog back.

The Saskatoon woman hasn’t seen her six-year-old Yorkie-Chihuahua mix, named Bella, in four months. She alleges the dog was stolen during a fight outside a Saskatoon mall and said she’s been running into dead ends trying to bring her canine companion home.

“I will always keep looking for Bella,” said Mitchell. “I miss her every day. It breaks my heart.”

Mitchell said she never left the house without Bella. The night the dog disappeared, Mitchell brought her to the Coachman bar in Market Mall.

“She goes with me everywhere. I hate leaving her at home,” Mitchell said.

A fight involving one of Mitchell’s friends broke out in the parking lot while she was outside smoking. She put the dog in a truck driven by a man she had been playing pool with earlier in the night, in order to help break up the fight.

“They seemed like nice, normal guys,” Mitchell said. “In a panic I put her in there.”

She only noticed the truck was gone after the fight was settled. She hasn’t seen her dog since.

Bella has both a microchip and tags, according to Mitchell, but those haven’t helped so far. Mitchell said she only made traction on locating her dog after receiving a tip from a care home worker in Saskatoon.

The worker told Mitchell she spotted Bella with a man at the care home. The man told staff he found the dog in the Market Mall parking lot.

Mitchell said she managed to track the man to B.C. but was unable to reach him.

“After I found out all this information from the care home worker and this guy wouldn’t cooperate, wouldn’t return our calls or anything, that’s when I initially went to the police,” she said.

Saskatoon police told CTV they closed the case because of insufficient evidence.

Mitchell said she’s disappointed with how the case was handled. She claims an officer assigned to the case called the alleged thief, but didn’t verify his claim the dog belonged to him.

“She says the man that I think has my dog told her over the phone that it is a male dog and he has had it for three years,” Mitchell explained. “I asked her, ‘Did he prove this to you?’”

The officer replied, according to Mitchell, “Well, no, we just spoke on the phone.”

Mitchell said despite the difficulties in locating Bella, she’s not going to give up the search.
