Saskatoon’s population has passed the quarter-million mark according to a new estimate by the City of Saskatoon.

The population of 253,000 as of March 1 is calculated using the suggested three per cent annual growth figure provided by Statistics Canada.

Saskatoon’s population was reported as 248,293 in the July 1, 2013 census data.

“This is an exciting milestone for Saskatoon. Based on the information from Statistics Canada, we have increased by a rate of 40.4 per thousand, which hasn’t been achieved by any other census metropolitan in more than 15 years,” said Alan Wallace, the city's director of planning and development.

Using the same calculation for the Saskatoon census metropolitan area (CMA), which includes surrounding rural communities, it is estimated the CMA population has reached 298,000 people.

The city's planning and development department regularly uses this calculation to estimate population levels. The data is used by city council and administration in developing long-range plans, determining future service needs, and policy framework.
