A landmark restaurant in Saskatoon mourns the loss of owner Ross Johnson Thursday.

Johnson took over the Broadway Cafe in 2009 and quickly became a well-loved boss and friend.

Nicole Cradovill has worked at the restaurant for 18 years. Her parents owned it until Johnson bought it two years ago. She says her late boss had the perfect personality for the job.

"He was the most amazing man. Anybody who knew him absolutely loved him. He always had time for a joke or a story and he was always smiling," says Cradovill.

Word of Johnson's sudden passing got out after some customers wondered why the café was closed on Christmas Eve. That's when Johnson died of natural causes.

Staff say Johnson wouldn't want the doors shut for long. His spouse is expected to take over.

"We're going to keep everything going. This place is full of love it's such a special place," says Cradovill. "So we're going to keep it going and work really hard to keep it up to his standards and what he wanted it to be."

Ross Johnson was 54 years old.
