Firefighters from across central Saskatchewan have arrived in La Ronge to assist with controlling wildfires.

Four more firefighters are on their way from Warman. They will replace the four that travelled to La Ronge yesterday.

Seven firefighters, a fire engine and a water truck arrived in the early morning hours from Saskatoon. The Saskatoon Fire Department sent assistance in response to Saskatchewan’s Emergency Management and Fire Safety’s request for additional resources.

More Saskatoon firefighters may be sent to La Ronge on a rotational basis. Complete coverage of staff and equipment will be maintained in Saskatoon, the City said in a press release.

Prince Albert has contributed five firefighters and a fire engine.

Nipawin sent two trucks and firefighters.

Muskoday First Nation has also sent resouces.

The province says there is a real threat to the town of La Ronge. On July 4th more than 7,000 people evacuated La Ronge, Lac La Ronge Indian Band and Air Ronge.

Currently, three are 114 active fires in Saskatchewan. 58 of them are larger than 100 hectares.

As of July 4th there have been 569 fires this season. In 2014 there were 193 fires.

The Ministry of Environment recommends that people avoid non-essential travel to the areas of La Ronge, La Loche and Pinehouse. Travel to the area is restricted while the smoke and wildfire remains.
