Plant lovers and anyone looking for a break from the cold will have one less option in Saskatoon for a while, as the Civic Conservatory prepares to close for renovations.

The City of Saskatoon says the conservatory in the Mendel building will close on Oct. 1, with the reopening not expected until late 2018. The work includes the replacement of its heating system, and will allow for the Children’s Discovery Museum to move into the space of the former Mendel Art Gallery.

Most of the plants from the building will be temporarily moved to a greenhouse for future use, according to the city.

This is the first extended closure for the facility since it opened in 1964.
