Saskatoon city council gave the green light to fund a $600,000 study to reduce traffic around railroads.

The two-phase study will assess options like underpasses, overpasses and relocating some rail lines.

The first phase is expected to cost more than $220,000, with the federal government covering half of the cost.

Once the first phase is complete, council would have to approve the second part of the study. The second phase is expected to cost nearly $400,000.

The entire study is expected to be completed by 2019.
