The effects of severe epilepsy can be devastating, but a program in Saskatoon is boasting promising results, allowing patients to live seizure free.

Desiree Nieckar has been seizure free for over a year thanks to a specialized procedure offered at the Royal University Hospital. She was originally diagnosed with epilepsy at age 12, and her seizures become more frequent as she got older.

“When I would seizure, I would simply just not be able to speak properly and I would mumble then I would be tired,” Nieckar said.

Now, there are calls for the program that helped Desiree to expand to give more timely treatment for people in Saskatchewan.

Chantel Huber takes an in-depth look at how the procedure works, and where doctors are hoping to take it from here. Tune in to CTV News at Six on Monday night to see the story.
