Jenna Rutherford couldn’t keep a smile off her face.

The 23-year-old photographer stood by at Saskatoon's John G. Diefenbaker airport Sunday night, watching as her friend nervously waited for the girl he was about to propose to in front of numerous strangers.

“He was almost sick to his stomach. It was cute,” Rutherford said.

Matt Eagle, 21, asked Rutherford if she could take a picture of him proposing to his girlfriend, Jasmine Godoy, 20, as Godoy returned with her mom and brother from a month-long trip to Europe.

“He asked me about a week ahead [to take the photos], but I kind of had a feeling the proposal was going to happen for a while,” Rutherford said. “He was scheming things.”

Eagle slowly approached his girlfriend as she walked through the gate. Godoy instantly knew something was up as she saw Rutherford with her camera and a friend who was also videotaping the proposal.

“What is going on?” she asked, kissing her boyfriend.

Eagle dropped to one knee and pulled out a ring. Godoy was ecstatic. She jumped up and down, covering her mouth in shock. She started crying.

“I didn’t know what was going. I mean, I knew what was going on, but it felt like a dream,” Godoy said.

Rutherford captured the moment perfectly with her camera. Eagle is on one knee, holding out the ring, and Godoy’s hand is over her mouth. Godoy’s mother’s mouth is wide open with excitement and a pilot who had just walked by is turning with a smile to catch the proposal.

Godoy’s mother wasn’t in on the plan. Eagle said only a few close friends and his family knew he was going to propose.

“It was kind of breathtaking. I couldn’t stop smiling,” Rutherford said.

The photo, which was posted to Facebook on Thursday, quickly went viral after it was shared on Reddit, a popular social news site, and Imgur, an image-sharing site.

The photo accumulated over 500,000 views its first day on Imgur and now has more than 700,000 views, Rutherford said. 290,000 people have liked the photo on Facebook.

The video, which Rutherford sent to CTV, has yet to be shared on social media websites.

The couple watched the video on Friday.

“I’m just pretty happy,” Godoy said, struggling to describe her excitement about her recent engagement.

The couple have been dating for two years, but met eight years ago at church.

“I’ve had a crush on him since I was little,” Godoy said.
