A man is facing charges after a violent sexual assault that left a woman injured in Battleford, Sask.

Around 4:30 a.m. Monday, RCMP responded to a home in the west-central Saskatchewan community for a report of a sexual assault.

Officers found a woman outside the home, who told police she had been sexually assaulted earlier that morning.

The woman was taken to hospital with injuries to her head, torso and extremities.

Mounties arrested a 33-year-old man Tuesday afternoon. Cory Smockum has been charged with sexual assault, assault and choking to overcome resistance.

Smockum made his first court appearance Wednesday in North Battleford and the case was adjourned until Feb. 3.

--- UPDATE: Cory Smockum was convicted of assault causing bodily harm following a two-week trial in April, 2016, according to Crown prosecutor Brenda Korchinski. He was found not guilty of sexual assault causing bodily harm.
