Layoff notices have been issued to more than 20 Saskatchewan Polytechnic employees across the province.

Eight employees were laid off in Prince Albert and five staff at each of the Saskatoon, Moose Jaw and Regina campuses. Both full- and part-time positions were eliminated.

The layoffs taking place this month are a result of a reduction to the institution’s operating grant, industry demand and program changes, according to a Saskatchewan Polytechnic spokesperson. There was a five per cent reduction to Saskatchewan Polytechnic’s operating grant.

In March, the provincial budget cut technical institute’s operating grants down from $156 million to $150 million. These institutes include Sask. Polytech, Saskatchewan Indian Institute of Technologies and Gabriel Dumont Institute.

Earlier this year, faculty members were offered voluntary separation packages. Forty-three employees opted to accept those, which will be effective June 30.
