Population growth in Saskatchewan is at its highest level in more than in 90 years, according to figures released Thursday.

The province’s population grew by 22,154 people between July 1, 2011, and July 1, 2012, according to Statistics Canada -- the greatest population growth in a single year since 1921.

There were 1,079,958 people living in Saskatchewan as of July 1.

The population growth of 6,581 during the quarter from April 1 to July 1 is the largest increase in a single quarter since Statistics Canada started keeping quarterly records in 1971, according to the provincial government.

Premier Brad Wall said in a news release that the population growth has exceeded the government's stated goal of 100,000 people in 10 years, with 80,000 more people calling Saskatchewan home during the past five years.
