A Saskatchewan man convicted in a fatal stabbing at a party in Saskatoon has been sentenced to 11 years in jail.

Arnold Halkett had earlier pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the June 2012 death of Nicholas Smith, who was fatally stabbed during a party at an apartment on Broadway Avenue.

Court heard Halkett, 47, stabbed Smith during an argument over prescription drugs.

The Crown had asked for a 15-year sentence. Outside the courthouse, relatives of the victim told reporters they were disappointed that Halkett wasn't given more jail time.

Halkett will be eligible for parole in six years.
