A rural Saskatchewan councillor who posted an online comment about the shooting death of a First Nations man has resigned.

The reeve of the Browning rural municipality said Ben Kautz resigned at a meeting Wednesday morning.

A screengrab of Kautz’s online comment was widely circulated following the Aug. 9 death of Colten Boushie, a 22-year-old Red Pheasant First Nation man killed after the vehicle he was in drove onto a farm in the Rural Municipality of Glenside, near North Battleford.

The property-owner, 54-year-old Gerald Stanley, is charged with second-degree murder. He has pleaded not guilty and was granted bail last week.

“In my mind his only mistake was leaving witnesses,” read Kautz’s post on a Saskatchewan farmers Facebook page. The comment was later removed and the page has since been closed.

"The Council of the R.M. of Browning No. 34 thanks Mr. Kautz for his years of dedicated service to the R.M. as well as his volunteering on several boards, committees and associations of the community," said a news release posted to the Browning rural municipality’s website.

Kautz has not yet spoken to CTV News about the comment, but his wife told The Canadian Press over the weekend her husband regrets the post.

His position is now listed as "vacant" on the Browning website.
