A report of three masked suspects armed with handguns on a grid road prompted police to lock doors at several rural Saskatchewan schools Monday.

RCMP in Rosetown were called at about 11:40 a.m. about three suspects, wearing balaclavas, who approached a victim driving on a road south of Highway 7, near Fiske, Sask.

The suspects reportedly approached the victim on foot with what were described as three handguns, police said in a media release. The victim immediately fled the scene but witnessed the suspects enter an older-style black SUV.

One suspect was described as having a long, dark ponytail, while a second suspect had orange, curly hair.

Officers from numerous police detachments — in the Biggar, Eston, Kerrobert, Kindersley, North Battleford, Rosetown, Swift Current and Unity areas — as well as volunteers in planes attempted to track down the suspects, but were unsuccessful.

Schools in the area were placed under hold and secures, until about 3 p.m., as a precautionary measure, according to RCMP. Police did not clarify which schools were affected.

Anyone with information on the alleged incident is asked to call RCMP or 911.
