Saskatoon’s Remai Modern art gallery will officially open Oct. 21.

The gallery announced the opening date Monday, highlighting the works and collections to be featured inside the new $84.6-million building.

The building will serve as the home to more than 400 Picasso linocuts — the “world’s most comprehensive collection of Picasso linocuts,” according to the gallery — as well as 23 Picasso ceramics. The inaugural exhibit, curated by the gallery CEO Gregory Burke, will be titled “Field Guide.”

Construction on Remai Modern began in the summer of 2013. The expected opening date has been pushed back several times.

Numbers sent to a city committee June 12 show the city contributed just over $30 million to the gallery's construction.
