Seven puppies are recovering in Prince Albert after being left out in the cold.

The puppies, about three and a half weeks old, were found Thursday morning in a cardboard box by a passerby near a highway at Spruce Home, about 15 kilometres north of Prince Albert.

The dogs are lucky to be alive, according to the Prince Albert SPCA.

The shelter says the number of animals being discarded on city streets this winter is on the rise. More than 40 animals have been dumped in the past two weeks, and the shelter, which is housing nearly 130 animals, is overcapacity.
