A legal aid lawyer for a 25-year-old man accused of attacking a man in a wheelchair is asking for a psychiatric assessment.

The defence lawyer for Justin James Crowe requested the assessment Wednesday in Saskatoon Provincial Court.

Crowe is charged with attempted murder. He was arrested after police say 57-year-old Robert Carignan was pulled from his wheelchair and beaten while Carignan was out with his dog at Spadina Crescent and 23rd Street over the weekend.

Carignan, who has a condition called Kennedy’s Syndrome, sustained serious injuries and was taken to hospital in critical condition.

The attack was random, investigators believe. The two men did not now know each other.

Crowe’s next court date is set for Friday.
